Discussion on Fakir Lalon Shah
Hi Everybody,
This is to draw your kind attention to an interesting discussion now on going in my Bauliana website on Fakir Lalon Shah.
Here are some excerpts:
Farhad Mazhar: It is said that he was singing a song when the time arrived for him to leave. ‘I am going’ – he said to his disciples. It is sung throughout a whole night. For Lalon, death was not something fearful, as theologians have made people believe. One has to prepare happily for death. This is a cultural preparation. Dying is like a marriage. Something you look forward to. Fear of death must be overcome. Therefore the white colour signifies the preparation for death, a cultural thing and not any so-called spiritual icon or sign of asceticism; white never implies denial of life in Lalon’s teachings…………….More
Sulav Chowdhury: What song Lalon was crooning in his stentorian voice at the time of his death doesn't substantiate his spiritual fecundity. It is all located in the system of thought--- in what way you intend to elucidate an incident. To Mazhar it was a clear quintessence of his mental sublimity, but to me, it is just an uncanny coincidence. What I would however prefer to pander to is how Lalon systematised and conceptualised his thought process and created a kingdom of his own, where he felt a perpetual frisson of happiness. Lalon's greatest achievement was an ability to recognise his physical constitution-- Mazhar accepts it too--- , but what is more significant and which the author never broached, is Lalon extracted his mental energy from this bodily bondage, which dragooned him into thinking of "another supernatural power" to whom he lays prostrate with bovine submission!...................More
Maia Grenell: Of Lalon's death, whether "coincidence" or "quintessence of his mental sublimity" is something that is unknown. Mazhar's statement about Lalon being "one sense known and one sense unknown" is an effort at describing Lalon's cultural significance, not as Sulav believes, to drape him in a shroud of spirituality.At this point, it is useful to point out that neither author really grasps the importance of the personal relationship between Siraj Shai and Lalon. How a relationship between two humans inexplicably drawn together, no matter what their stature, can play on the internal development is a very important point when discussing this subject.Furthermore, if one denies Lalon's "Gnosis" (the closest English can come to "Ma'rifat" that I have found), then one would be denying the source of Lalon's exclamation to his disciples:
"Where are all of you? Come now! The small fish came!"
