A Birthday Gift I want to Treasure

Hi Everybody,

Just a quick note to say that I have moved to Niketon in Gulshan 1 on the 4th of September and just as I was settling down and wondering what could be the best birthday (16th September) gift that I could give myself, on the 10th I decided on a SNAP to give up smoking – which I had being doing with ‘loving’ unbroken regularity for well over 25 years now!!

Now that is easier said than done – and it is not as if I eased myself off, reducing the intake – in fact what I did was DROP from 35 to 40 sticks a day to zilch, ZERO. Through trial and errors I know, that’s the only way anybody can give up smoking…none of this ‘giving up slowly’ really works.

On the 11th September I woke up feeling flushed, edgy and having all symptoms of a massive withdrawal and just didn’t know what to do. To think of it, nicotine is the second most addictive drug after Heroin, and I realized I just can’t kick this without professional help.

I called up Dr.Arup Ratan Chowdhury the Rabindra Sangeet singer and somebody for whom I have had my highest admiration and respects. He has been a national anti-smoking advocate and has several laurels to his credit, including helping draft the law in Bangladesh which has now outlawed smoking in public places and a ban on advertisement. He mentioned to me some months back that if I wanted to quit he would help me….so I called and he said ‘Mac stop everything you are doing right now and get over to my office at the BIRDEM ‘.
It took me and hour to get to him by which time I was in a near hallucinatory state, my mouth parched dry and my speech incoherent. Yes guys 25 years of cigarrettes can do that ----- make you insane when you dont have it!!

In any case Arup Da suggested a prescription drug that I have to take for the next 12 weeks and the end result is SO FAR SO GOOD – NO CIGARETTES SINCE 10TH SEPTEMBER and today it’s Day 11!!!

Wish me luck everybody, tough as it is, I am hanging in there FOR GOOD. At age 48 can I expect a better Birthday gift - and one that I actually gave myself?

Bye

Mac

Hi Mac Bhai,

Glad you could make it. It should be an example for those who cannot breakfree from any kind of dependencies. Actually human beings have the power to control their addictions, which is required to have a diseasefree life. And you need the control because you can merely replace your damaged body parts. Power and enjoyment is useless if there is no control over it.

Btw. A belated happy birthday.
